Touch the Mezuzah!

Last night we dedicated our Youth Room with a symbolic MEZUZAH.

To put it simply, it is a Jewish tradition of hanging a container with a scripture inside on your doorpost as you come and go - you touch it to remind yourself of the commandments of God.

for more info on what a mezuzah is, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mezuzah

We simply posted a paper with this scripture on the inside and outside of the room;
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
You shall love the LORD your God

with all your heart

and with all your soul

and with all your might.

The full scripture references are from
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21. Here's part of it that gives some specific instructions;

11: 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

We then played a mixer game called "Find Someone Who..." A chaotic game where you had to find people in the group who could sign off your items (e.g. left handed, blue-eyed, been to Colorado, make an ugly face, sing happy birthday)

Then we brainstormed about how to redecorate the youth room and came up with a "wish list".

We then played another improv game called "Freeze!" where two people start acting out a situation, then someone yells "Freeze!", that person taps one person and takes their frozen position and changes the story into something completely different. An exercise in creative thinking and drama.
